“계절이 지나가는 하늘에는 가을로 가득 차 있습니다.” 시 별 헤는 밤의 첫 말처럼, 영화 <계절이 지나가는 하늘에는>은 그렇게 무언가를 헤아리려는 듯 달이 쫓아오는 길을 굽이굽이 헤매며 시작한다. 덕산초등학교의 열다섯 아이는 학교 곳곳을 활발하게 누빈다. 6년째 다니고 있는 학교는 아이들에게 있어 선생님들보다도 훨씬 속속들이 알고 있는, 편안한 공간처럼 보인다. 새로 부임한 담임 선생님은 학교 곳곳을 천천히 거닌다. 새로이 시작한 삶에 적응하려 노력하는 그에게 이 학교는 편치 않은, 아직은 그저 일하는 장소에 불과할지도 모른다. 예측 불가능하게 떠돌아다니는 아이들을 담아내는 카메라는 그와 반대로 좀처럼 움직이는 법이 없다. 그저 학교라는 장소, 교실이라는 공간을 오가는 사람들을 거리를 두고 지켜본다. 아이들은 자유롭게 드나들고 어른은 묵직하게 한곳에 머문다. 학교를 벗어나 집과 동네에 다다라서도 그 시선은 억지를 부리려 드는 기색이 없다. 그 서늘한 거리감은 역설적이게도 되레 편안한 따스함을 보내온다. 지나가는 하늘, 흘러가는 시간처럼 학교의 아이들은 머무를 수 없다. 새로이 졸업하고 입학한다. 계절처럼 떠나가는 아이들의 마음은 무엇으로 가득 차 있을까. 누가 아이들의 마음을 헤아릴 수 있을까. “In the sky where seasons pass by, Autumn fills the air.” Like the first words of the poem “Counting the stars at night,” the film In the Sky Where Seasons Pass By begins by wandering the path the moon follows, as if counting something. Fifteen children briskly roam around Deoksan Elementary School. The school the children have attended for 6 years seems like a comfortable place for them who know it better than the teachers. And the new teacher walks slowly around the school. For him, who is trying to adjust to his new life, this school is not yet a comfortable and may be just a place to work. Contrary to children running around unpredictably, the cameras filming them hardly move. It simply observes the space of school and classroom and the people passing by, from a distance. There, the children move in and out freely, and the adults calmly stay in one place. Even when the camera leaves school and approaches the houses in the village, there is no sign of compulsion in its gaze. Paradoxically, the cool distance of the camera provides comfort and kindness. Like the sky where seasons pass and the time passing by, the children can’t stay in school. They graduate and re-enter the school. What fills the hearts of children who leave like the seasons?
